data-fontsize=\"22\" data-lineheight=\"25.08px\">Testing and approval<\/h2>\n<p>Full-scale blast testing of <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/reinforced-earth-mechnically-stabilized-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reinforced Earth\u00ae walls<\/a> have taken place between 1975 and 2014. Tests were performed on structures built with both concrete and steel facing elements. Tests have taken place in USA, France, Germany, Australia, Israel, and South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>In 1988 the US Army Corps of Engineers designated Geoquest walls as a standard design for reinforced soil barricades. Subsequently, the Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board (DDESB) approved our walls to protect facilities and equipment located close to explosives sites from high-velocity, low-angle fragment damage.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-selfhosted-video\" style=\"max-width:100%;\"><div class=\"video-wrapper\"><video playsinline=\"true\" width=\"100%\" style=\"object-fit: cover;\" muted=\"true\" preload=\"auto\" controls=\"1\"><source src=\"https:\/\/www.geoquest-group.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/03\/blast-video.webm\" type=\"video\/webm\">Sorry, your browser doesn&#039;t support embedded videos.<\/video><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p>The official approval review documentation, (namely DEF 149-30-01) concluded the following benefits of building blast barricades with <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/reinforced-earth-mechnically-stabilized-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reinforced Earth\u00ae MSE walls<\/a>. That our walls:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can be economically and rapidly constructed<\/li>\n<li>Requires shallow foundation<\/li>\n<li>Variety of architectural facing elements and finishes available (cruciform, hexagonal, ribbed, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>No height or length limitations<\/li>\n<li>Facing elements are reusable<\/li>\n<li>Walls can be located close to site boundaries or obstructions<\/li>\n<li>System adaptable to sloping wall configurations and to tier<\/li>\n<li>System can tolerate significant amount of settlement<\/li>\n<li>Repair can be accomplished on individual facing elements<\/li>\n<li>Galvanized strips, steel wire mesh, geosynthetics are used for soil reinforcement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A similar research and development trajectory for the <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/techspan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechSpan\u00ae precast concrete arch technology<\/a> beginning in the late 1990\u2019s also continues today. In 1999, both <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/reinforced-earth-mechnically-stabilized-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reinforced Earth\u00ae<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/techspan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechSpan\u00ae<\/a> was approved in combination by the US Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board (DDESB) for construction of blast barriers or standard oval arch earth covered storage magazines (ECM). <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/techspan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechSpan\u00ae<\/a>\u2019s 3-hinge staggered arrangement integrates the arch\u2019s backfill into the FEM model giving <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/techspan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechSpan\u00ae<\/a> the inertia and flexibility to absorb explosive energy while remaining structurally intact.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 this standard design was improved with options for the owner\u2019s engineer or building contractor to select optional geosynthetic soil reinforcements and fiber concrete reinforcements in lieu of steel reinforcements.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"line-height: 1.14\" data-fontsize=\"22\" data-lineheight=\"25.08px\">Non-military applications<\/h2>\n<p>Private sector and municipal establishments also encounter risks associated with explosions and bombardment. For instance, mining sites are known to utilize vast amounts of explosives in their operations. We have collaborated with leading mining companies, explosive product manufacturers and fortifications investigative board members to reduce their risks in their operating environment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"line-height: 1.14\" data-fontsize=\"22\" data-lineheight=\"25.08px\">Wall materials and configurations<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/reinforced-earth-mechnically-stabilized-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reinforced Earth\u00ae<\/a> barricades and blast shielding can be clad with concrete, steel or even vegetation. While in most cases we employ concrete facing, our <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/terratrel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terratrel\u00ae<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/reinforced-earth\/terramet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TerraMet\u2122<\/a> alternative steel facing systems offer the benefit of being lightweight and easily transportable for rapid installation without the need for heavy equipment.
